Our Top Self Storage Tips

General Storage | 20.03.12

1. Store outside of city centres and save money

Don’t pay to store your belongings in expensive high profile sites in city centres. The traffic congestion around such sites can also be very busy, costing you precious time. Storing your belongings outside the city centre will reduce your storage costs considerably. Our storage facilities in Gloucester, Stroud and North Bristol often charge 50% less than other local self storage providers and they are still local and very easy to get to.

2. Only rent as much storage space as you need

Our storage units come in a variety of different sizes ranging from small student lockers to large 200 square foot containers. We are more flexible with our storage terms than other local companies and allow our customers to change storage unit size when necessary depending on availability. So if half of your storage unit is empty, consider reducing your unit size to save money.

3. Beware of hidden extras added on to the price

Make sure the quote you are given by a storage company includes insurance and ask whether there are any additional charges for access. All our prices include free insurance and there are no hidden charges or deposits to go on top. You are free to access your storage unit as little or as often as you like for no extra charge.

4. Beware of introductory offers

Move in for £1.00? First month free? Many storage companies offer great introductory deals but they are often too good to be true. Although you may get your first month free, the price thereafter will be well inflated to make up for it. So be sure you know the price per month and that it will not be increased at regular intervals. Unlike other self storage providers, we advertise all our prices on our website so you can be sure you are getting the best deal.

5. Don’t pay for 24 hour access if you don’t need it.

Some self storage companies offer 24 hour access to your belongings, but this can come at a high price. Do you really need access during the night? Also think are your belongings safe in a 24 hour storage centre that can be accessed at any time. Space Centre Self Storage are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays.
6. Organise your storage unit properly

Make effective use of the storage space you rent by making sure you load the unit properly. Using boxes of the same size will be easier to stack and allow you to use the full height of the storage unit. Remember to label each box with the contents so you can keep track of what’s inside. Make sure that each box is relatively full to prevent it becoming squashed if something heavy is put on top of it. You may also want to leave some walking space inside your storage unit so that you can reach items at the back.

7. Reduce your packaging costs

Boxes and bubble wrap can cost a fortune, all to end up in the rubbish once you have moved out of your storage unit. Supermarkets often give away old boxes for free, so start collecting and packing up a few boxes as soon as you can. We also sell packaging materials at very competitive prices which are over 50% less than other big storage providers.

8. Use a high quality padlock

Here at Space Centre Self Storage we insure your goods free of charge up to the value of £3,000 and additional cover is available. All of our storage facilities are in secure compounds which are locked and alarmed outside of opening hours and have CCTV. It is important however to use a high quality padlock on your storage unit. We recommend the use of discus padlocks or closed shackle padlocks that are insurance approved.

9. Are you tied in?

We only ask for 10 days notice when you want to vacate your storage unit and ask for a minimum rental term of just a month. So there is no long term commitment and you have the flexibility to move out when you need to. If you move out part way through a month and have already paid, we will give you a refund for the days you have not used.

10. Can you store it?

Remember that there are some items you will not be able to store for safety reasons. You will be unable to store anything flammable, toxic or illegal. For further help or advice, please do not hesitate to contact us or complete our online enquiry form.
