Customer Information | 29.10.13

Have you always stored your belongings at home? Are your rooms cluttered as a result? If so, why not break the habit of a lifetime and consider using self storage. Using self storage is the obvious way to de-clutter your home and store your possessions in a damp-free, secure unit which is accessible to you at all times.

People who use self storage units do so to keep safe their antiques, ebay items, furniture, books, videos, cds and of course, those LPs and cassettes that you never use but will not give away! For those of you out there wondering, ‘What’s an LP or cassette?’, they were the forerunners to CDs! Many will even store their garden furniture and tools in a bid to prevent any winter rust setting in. Does that make sense? Of course it does.

So, having made the decision to use a local self storage facility, what type of unit would be the best for you? It sounds simple, but there are several options available to you.

Here are our tips for First Timers. When using self storage:

  1. Choose the Right Unit
Firstly, make sure it is damp free and of course, the right size. Don’t go too big and don’t opt for a unit that is too small. After all, cramming your belongings into a small space could lead to damages.
  2. Pack your things properly
Once you have chosen the right unit for your requirements, make sure you do your homework in terms of how to store your belongings. Firstly, to ensure their protection, it’s advisable to pack them in purpose built boxes or containers. Remember, your chosen self storage centre will assist you in making the right choice of storage box or container. Make sure you label each box clearly before stacking them in an orderly, safe fashion. You’ll find some tips here.
  3. Stick to the rules for safety
When usin self storage there are some rules you need to know. For example, if storing mechanical tools like lawnmowers etc, you must ensure you remove any oil or fuel from them before you store them. This will add another level of safety to your stored materials. If you’re not sure what to do with your machinery, ask your provider. You might find this earlier post on useful.
  4. Make sure you can locate your items once stored
One of the biggest concerns when it comes to using self storage, is finding the labelled boxes once they’ve been stored. Remember, it will be of no concern whatsoever, if you are organised. Make aisles so you can get to all the boxes without having to take out the containers in front and ensure the heavier boxes are stored at the bottom.
  5. Avoid Damage
Repeating the last point above, make sure heavier items are always stored at the bottom of any stacks, you don’t want things below them to get crushed or damaged. Finally, to avoid mould from appearing, place the boxes at least an inch away from the wall.
