Loft storage is the key to creating space

Customer Information | 29.04.14

With winter having passed, it’s time to think about putting your overcoats, jumpers, scarves, gloves, bedding and boots away for the spring and summer and creating some much needed space around the house.

Your loft is the ideal place for immediate, temporary storage. Unless, of course, you’re one of those hoarders who has spent the past 10 or 20 years using your loft space as an indoor junk-yard. If so, it’s time to de-clutter, create some loft storage space and subsequently fill the available gaps with your winter woollies and bedding. Loft storage is key to anyone’s attempt to create space around the house.

How do de-clutter your loft – safely

The biggest issue people face when they go into their loft to start the clearing process, is moving around without falling and damaging yourself, as well as the ceiling below. Boarding provides the answer to this and makes loft storage a far more viable prospect.

Even if it simply creates a walkway to the back of your loft where you can store those goods that you might not need for some time, you will find life a great deal easier.

De-cluttering the loft

Once the boarding is down and you’re happy the walkway is safe, take a look at which boxes and bags are surplus to requirements. You might find two boxes which are both half full. Why not empty box one and fill box two. Dispense with box one and hey presto, a space appears!! It makes sense and of course, creates more valuable space for further loft storage.

If you replicate this in three or four areas of the attic, you will be surprised at exactly how much room can be created.

Remember also, that if you do have antiques and belongings that you need to remove from the loft, but you wish to keep, you could always consider a small self storage unit at your local self storage centre.

Many people use a unit to keep goods and belongings until the children move on to college or university or into their first house. A small unit will be safe, secure, damp-free and easily accessible, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Storing your belongings

Once you have de-cluttered the loft and identified those clothes and winter goods that need to be stored up there, make sure you utilise every corner of the loft. Don’t waste space! Avoid storing bags you will need in the short-term, behind bags and boxes you plan to leave there for the foreseeable future.

You will also find it frustrating and time consuming if you lack organisation. So, last but not least, mark your bags and boxes clearly. It will make it much easier when you come to retrieve your winter clothes and bedding later in the year.
